Kidnapping is taking someone in order to get something from their relatives, for example, their parents. The kidnappers' goal is to get money or something like that.
Abduction is when you take someone for malicious purposes.

What would call it when somebody was taken away by terrorists and they asked for money for the victim to be returned home. (The terrorists are asking a government of the country that he belongs to to pay a great deal of money.)

If someone is taken and then the takers ask for money, or something else, to return that person, you can say "taken for ransom". Like if my daughter were taken and they demanded $50,000 before they gave her back, I could say "she was taken for ransom".
