Which language is much closer to Turkish? Azerbaijani or Gagauzian?

I think both are close to Turkish in separate ways. If you're a little bit familiar with old Turkish (of the Ottoman era), Azerbaijani sounds much closer. On the other hand, if you're familiar with the Turkish language spoken by North-Western Turkish (countryside) people, Gagauzian sounds much closer. The problem for both is that Gagauzian (naturally) transformed a lot as they live in Balkans among non-Turkic nations and far from Turkey. So, they have some words that are unfamiliar to us here. Azerbaijani, on the other hand, has gone through a similar process through years. First they remained disconnected to Turkey geographically because of Armenia in between. They could form connection more with the Iranian peoples and languages (let's not forget the differences in sects). And finally there is a big fact like Soviet Russia in history. So they have a lot of Iranian (Farsi at most - I guess) and Russian words in their languages as a natural result of these events and phenomena. In essence Gagauzian and Azerbaijani are close to Turkish in the same proportion as they are both of South-Western (Oghuz) branch of Turkic group. Yet, as I summarized humbly above, history and geography created a distance in its own away for both languages. Thanks to the appearance of private TV channels since 1990s, I guess both both countries (AZ-TR) can get to know the other's language more and more every day. So, for common people, both languages can sound more and more familiar if they happen to pay a little more attention to each other. However, this is not the case for Gagauzian as they do not have their own sovereign country like us. I happen to come across some Gagauzian videos and etc online but I don't even know if they have any private tv channels for themselves. By the way, there are some Azerbaijani guys here. They speak Turkish really great. So I think they can say much more about the similarities or differences (closeness) between Turkish and Azerbaijani. I'd like to hear some from them anyway. Hope they'll see this question.
