İngilizce (ABD) hakkında soru

When I want to talk about something that was happening in the past but not really sure whether it happened or not, what do I say?

Something that might have been happening?
Or something that was possibly happening?

I learned that “Have been” grammatically means something happened in the past and is happening also at the present.
However, the “something” I mentioned above was happening in the past and is no longer present for sure.
