AMERİKA BİRLEŞİK DEVLETLERİ hakkında soru
Is it common for Americans to move to a different province which is far away from their hometown?
Although Korea is much smaller than the US, other than some special kind of reasons like a job and entering university, many people tend to move within the same city or province once they're settled down since moving to a whole different region is thought to be kind of bothersome.
How about Americans?

@ilovekorea337 The US has states and counties instead of provinces. Canada has provinces.
It is rare for people to move from big cities to small towns. It is more common for people to move from small towns to big cities to seek employment or higher education. This is sometimes called "brain drain," as troubled small towns get worse from losing their most talented young people.
Many Americans like to move further south when they retire, where the winters are not as cold. Florida is famously full of retired people.

I forgot to ask one more thing. It's relatively common for Koreans to move to the countryside or a small city/town from a big city after retirement. Is this same in the US?

@dongelev85 Oops. I made a mistake! I should have written as 'state'. In Korean, province and state are translated as exactly the same word, so I often make this mistake. Thank you for pointing that out! And thank you for your quick response as well.

I think most people don't like to move too far away from their hometown unless they have to or really have some aspiration specific to another place. I'm from Texas and moved to Boston (over 3000km apart) because of better job opportunities in my field.

Everyone I know lives far away from where they were brought up. They moved to another place for college, a good job or because friends or a girlfriend/boyfriend moved somewhere.

Compared to other countries, Americans are very, very mobile. Most people move for jobs, study or personal interests or family connections. It is extremely common.
If I understand correctly, the population of metro Seoul is almost half the population of Korea. So I think people generally move to Seoul to study or work, like in many other countries, migrating from the countryside to the capital.
Once you're in Seoul, where is there to go? You're already at the top. 😅 We used to say, there's only two places in the world: Manhattan, and not-happenin'! 🤣
The difference in the US is that it is more diversified, with many large and medium size cities spread out across the country, so you might end up anywhere.
That said, the majority of the US population lives on the east coast.

@20thCenturyMan Thank you!
What you said about the population around the capital area in Korea is true! BUT, still, even the people living there can move to outside of the capital area for a job and entering university because so many good government-owned corporations, research centers and even some government buildings are outside of Seoul due to the Korean government's longtime policy to decentralize population concentrated around the capital. Also, many well-known big Korean companies like Samsung, LG and Hyundai have so many branches throughout the nation. Some other big companies have their HQ outside of Seoul. There're some special kind of jobs like soldiers that have to frequently move to other areas.
Additionally, some of the most prestigious universities in Korea such as KAIST and POSTECH are outside of Seoul. It's also common for excellent Korean high school graduates to go to a medical school outside of the capital area. Due to all these kinds of reasons, we don't just stick inside of the metropolitan area. But, like I said, I think Koreans tend to live in the same region once they're settled down because moving to a totally new region is a big deal to many people although it's a much smaller country than the US. So, I was curious about Americans since they live in a much bigger country than Korea.
