what is the difference makes (zu) in the meaning.
My teacher told me that with dates we MUST use (von ... bis zu). and (von .. bis) with hours only.
I am sure that he is wrong and with dates we can use also (bis without zu). But I need a clarification.

Es ist absolut üblich auch in offiziellen Texte, "vom xx.xx. bis xx.xx." zu schreiben. Ich finde aber auf Anhieb keine grammatische Regel und keine Beleg z. B. im Duden.
Vom xx.xx. bis zum xx.xx. ist auf jeden Fall auch richtig, aber nicht notwendig.

Vom Frühjahr bis (zum) Herbst - also "zum" ist hier fakultativ.

@luhaman I think the difference is minor between the 2
von ... bis : from .. to
von .. bis zu: from .. up to (untill/ till)
von ... bis : from .. to
von .. bis zu: from .. up to (untill/ till)

@luhaman than main problem is that many many teachers (besonders in meinem Land) telling the students that it must be von ... bis zum with dates!!!!
