There are there variations of this adverb.
(4) is not correct, so Ex.2 needs に.
(1) OK ほんと きらいです。
(2) OK ほんとに きらいです。
(3) OK ほんとうに きらいです。
(4) NG ほんとう きらいです。

I noticed that (1) is correct and (4) isn't correct, but (1) and (4) are all without "に".
I guess "ほんと" is a colloquial way of "ほんとう", but it seems that they may not be interchanged at any time?
