@Meare7 Usually the word "shade" has a positive connotation, suggesting that you want to avoid bright sunlight. "It's too hot here; let's sit in the shade."

Shade is usually uncountable. "A shade" is an old word for a ghost. That it what it means in the Edgar Allen Poe poem "El Dorado."

If it's a metaphor for evil or sadness, "shadow" is used more often. "A shadow has blanketed the entire city" or "a shadow has fallen over the city."

The period of low light as the sun sets is "dusk" or "twilight." "It is dusk in the city."
