Korece hakkında soru

I learnt that when we conjugate the verb into the past we use 았어요 with the stem ending with ㅗ, ㅏ
And we use 었어요 with any other ending
And 였어요 with 하 stem
But when I translate anything into past the conjugation is alway in 다 form. For example : 잡았다, 팔았다
Can someone please explain it to me??
