The police give out parking tickets when you park somewhere you're not allowed to. You have to pay the ticket, like if you get a speeding ticket for driving faster than the speed limit.

It depends.
A parking pass is something you (usually) hang in your car window that shows you have permission to park in a certain area (usually a certain parking lot, like that for an apartment or a university, but also for special events). It's generally something you have to pay for, and could also be a bumper sticker or something you stick in a window.
A parking ticket is what you get if you park in that parking lot without a pass, don't pay the parking meter, or otherwise park in a no parking zone.

@tjstkdn They are NOT interchangeable. Never ever. A parking pass is permission, and a parking ticket is when you get in trouble.

Also, I forgot, there is one time when you might get a "parking ticket" that isn't a penalty: at a parking garage, or a parking lot with an attendant. When you first pull into a parking garage or a lot with an attendant, you get a "parking ticket." You keep that ticket until it's time to leave, then pay the attendant on the way out of the parking lot/garage.
Those are more common in cities, so I didn't immediately think of them.

@shiroduckie oh so there are two types of parking system?
1. pay up front for the pass and leave the pass in the car. what you need to do when you leave is just showing the pass to the attendant
2. you take a ticket from a attendant and keep it with yourself. you pay the parking fare when you are leaving the place.(parking fare is a right term? lol)
did i got it straight?? 😺😺😺

@tjstkdn That sounds correct. For a certain parking garage, you could buy a monthly pass in advance, or you could take a ticket and pay by the hour.
