ex) So, I agree with the statement. However. I still can understand the opposite opinion.
ex) So, I agree with the statement. However. I still can understand the opposite opinion.
A:
It depends on the essay. Some essays don't want you to use "I", or passive statements such as "the article says..." (the article can not speak, so it can't actually SAY anything).
It also depends on the audience I think. If this is an assignment for an english/literature class, then the teacher will usually pay more attention to the grammar, style, as well as if the argument is logically consistent (I.e. you don't contradict yourself). A history/social science class might care about consistency but probably not very much about grammar.
Lastly, it depends on your assignment. If you are asked to argue for one side then it may weaken your argument if you agree with the opposition. All of my english classes prefered that the students stuck 100% to one side instead of acknowledging if the opposition had good points. That being said, for a fair argument (i.e. politics or social science class) I think you should acknowledge the opposing party's views.
To answer your question, it is fine to refer to the opposite opinion, however it may be risky to say that you understand the opposition's perspective. I would probably write something like this: While the opposition provides interesting points about _______, I believe..../I agree with the previous statement that.....
